Home remedies for lice

Hair lice in kids

Lice can quickly become a nuisance when left unnoticed. Having lice doesn’t really cause a disease, but having them is irritating. The baby may experience intense itching which may make her irritable and restless. This may also cause disturbed sleep. Here are some effective home remedies to try to rid the baby off the lice:

Salt and Vinegar Mixture

You can render your child’s scalp lice-free with a mixture of salt and vinegar. Salt is an antiseptic while vinegar prevents nits from latching on to hair strands. Spray the mix on the hair and scalp, and rinse. Comb the lice and nits using a nit comb.

Garlic

Grind 8-10 cloves of garlic with lime juice into a paste, apply to the child’s scalp. Rinse with warm water after 30 minutes.

Petroleum Jelly

Petroleum jelly restricts the movement of lice and suffocates them. Apply a thick layer of petroleum jelly onto your child’s scalp and cover the head with a shower cap overnight. Use a nit comb to comb away the nits and remove dead lice in the morning.

Olive Oil

Apply olive oil to your child’s scalp until the hair and scalp seem to be saturated. This will suffocate the lice and their eggs to death. Comb the dead lice out after 15-20 minutes, and shampoo. Repeat this process a few times until the lice disappears.

Tea Tree Oil

Mix tea tree oil and water in a spray bottle and spray it on your child’s scalp. Cover it with a shower cap for 3-4 hours and rinse thoroughly. Comb the dead lice out.  Do this twice a week.

Onion Juice

Prepare onion juice by grinding onion in a mixer and sieving it. Apply it on baby’s scalp for about 3 to 4 hours. Comb off dead lice and nits with a nit comb and rinse thoroughly with shampoo.

Neem Oil

Mix a few drops of neem oil to your child’s regular shampoo. Use a nit comb to remove dead lice while the hair is still wet.

Eucalyptus Oil

Mix 15-20 drops of eucalyptus oil with olive oil and apply on the scalp of your child. Leave it on overnight with a shower cap and comb in the morning to remove the dead lice. Shampoo thoroughly.

These are simple home remedies you could try to free your child’s hair and scalp from lice infestation. These may not work in one shot and you may have to try them repeatedly for a few times. Some of these can be repeated daily as well.
